Top Five (5) Ways to be Involved in Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)

From sending emails to shopping online or finding recipes, and everything in between, the internet has become so integrated into our daily lives. Most of us take this for granted. However, the internet is not automatically a luxury to everyone as websites and apps continue to be largely inaccessible to people living with a range of disabilities. This is not acceptable, especially when it becomes a barrier to accessing the same services as everyone else.

At Wandke Consulting, we advocate for accessibility and inclusion to be implemented into design and we ask you to please join us. In honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), we will highlight five ways you can help create an accessible online space and make the world a better place for all people.

What You Can You Do

You are on your way to helping make a change in that educating yourself is the first step to creating a more inclusive environment and building your bottom line.

1. Read the blog post that “sparked” GAAD!

Global Accessibility Awareness Day was sparked by the article Challenge: Accessibility know-how needs to go mainstream with developers, now., authored in 2011 by Joe Devon, a web developer.

2. Fix your website!

Just learning and talking about a topic does not increase access. Putting this information into practice does. Check out our Top Seven (7) Web Accessibility Tips that you can compare and contrast with your website to begin creating a more inclusive presence. Also, be sure to check out WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines and begin implementing them today!

3. Make your virtual meetings accessible

Whether it be for work or for social engagements, over the past year, virtual platforms have become prevalent in internet use.  Check out our blog post on Top Four (4) Ways to Make Your Zoom Meetings More Welcoming to the Disability Community.

4. See how overall access can tap into the untapped market

The disability community within the United States alone comprises a $490 billion market. Check out our video clip on Disability Market and Your Website.
